Golden Age

Looking at some of the current statistics, it’s hard to believe Nova Scotia was once a powerhouse economy. Today our per capita Gross Domestic Product is the second lowest in Canada and our labour productivity is 22% less than that of the rest of the country. Added to those grim facts is a provincial debt of over $12 billion dollars carrying an annual interest of nearly $1 billion dollars. It’s a stark contrast to a couple hundred years ago when tall ships ruled the waves and fish and timber brought wealth to a budding economy. Nova Scotia was a founding province of confederation. It was the first colony in the British Empire to achieve responsible government. Yet here we sit in 2009 a have-not province that our own prime minister said fosters a ‘culture of defeat’.

Why our government has been silent?
Many Nova Scotians are wondering why our government has been silent regarding a response to the downturn in the global economy and the provincial economy. ………Manufacturing shipments are down by over 14% from last year. ……..unemployment has gone up 0.6 points in one month and is now 8.8% ……..for the past three months we have had over 10% increases every month in the number of bankruptcies
